Preventing starvation in Turkana, Kenya

MOTHER_AND_CHILD_IN_CLINIC[1]
Children, like this baby in Turkana, Kenya, are at a high risk of malnutrition and starvation during a disaster situation like the current drought in the region. Much of the region is pastoral or agro-pastoral, meaning they rely on mainly livestock for survival. Unfortunately, this drought has been so bad that livestock are dying, meaning an important food source is disappearing. In addition to this, people in this region often must walk over 2 miles to get water. World Vision is addressing this by providing food and water support to those in need in the region, including this mother and her child.

The World Vision general food distribution program benefits 37,000 people in East and South Turkana. In addition to this, individuals are treated in the Outpatient Therapy Program, which provides any additional support to those in further need. Children are of a particular concern due to their high vulnerability, and special steps have been taking to ensure child health. For instance, children in the Outpatient Therapy Program receive Plumpy’nut, a highly nutritious food supplement which helps them recover from malnutrition. In addition to this, World Vision is providing medical support and shelters to those in need.

Thanks you for your donation – your contribution helped save lives.
